Het veld trekt op richting de vernieuwde Castrol Kurve. Ralf Schumacher, heeft de buitenlijn...  ...maar passeert Juan Montoya en neemt de leiding. Daarachter schuiven de twee Ferrari's en David Coulthard in.  De Ferrari's zijn duidelijk licht gestart. Rubens Barrichello passeert in de eerste ronde zowel Montoya als Ralf.
Ook Michael Schumacher passeert de twee Williams'. Voor de anderen verdwijnen ze aan de horizon.  Montoya heeft zijn handen vol aan de beide McLarens. Coulthard en Raikkonen zetten hem onder druk. In de 28e ronde doet Coulthard een inhaalpoging buitenom in de eerste bocht.
Montoya spint echter op de kerbs en ramt met zijn achterwiel het voorwiel van Coulthard. Beiden vallen uit. Michael Schumacher maakt een zeldzaam foutje in de RTL Kurve. Hij krijgt de auto weer in het rechte spoor.   Barrichello's tweede pitstop is cruciaal voor het verloop van de race: hij behoudt de leiding voor Schumacher.
De Ferrari's rijden in de slotfase dicht bij elkaar. Alle ogen zijn gericht op de pitmuur... Maar de teamorders blijven uit: Rubens Barrichello pakt eindelijk zijn tweede overwinning. De Braziliaan is na afloop dolgelukkig met zijn zege.
